What is the most popular Food in Rwanda

In Rwanda, meals are not too spicy and simply made with local ingredients (people can buy from local markets or cultivate themselves). The cuisine here is simple and unique, which is historically influenced by different ethnics groups in Rwanda. You can easily find beans, corn, millet, banana fruit and sweet potatoes in their daily dish.

A popularly traditional breakfast in Rwanda consists of potatoes, porridge (a mixture of corn, millet, sorghum combined with milk). Potatoes, which were introduced to this country by the German, are now very popular and widely cultivated in Rwanda. They also use bread and tea for breakfast, which has lots of sugar and milk put in it.

For dinner, as considered the heaviest meal of the day, some of the most popular choices are ugali (maize and porridge), isombe (cassava leaves with eggplant and spincach), umutsima (cassava and corn), and mizuzu (fried plantains). By that, you can see the diet here is high in vegetables and meat (beef and goat). However, the people living by the rivers, lakes, rarely eat animal meat. They can use fish to replace meat for months.

Although Rwanda has a huge consumption of brewery, it’s hardly to see women drink alcohol in any forms. Men here like to have beer in their free time. Besides commercial beer, the people here can make their own beer and alcoholic beverages (they use sorghum, corn or fermented plantains). You can see the Ikigage, which is a very popular alcoholic drink in Rwanda.
